With one set of tubes (1:1 magnification) I can say the results are comparable with the Canon 100 macro USM. Mine (a Porst made in Japan) has some kind of mirror lock-up (the mirror locks when you activate the self-timer - very usefull, actualy this is the reson I still have this camera). You'll still need a very good tripod and mirror lock-up if your camera has one, it's a very very usefull feature. For your kind of work (static subjects) I think is the cheapest solution (you can find extension tubes for M42 almost for nothing and a good 50mm lens at a very low cost). I used with very good results a 50/1.8 Pentacon lens on a m42 body with extension tubes, both with the lens normal facing and reversed.
